the History of
JAKEL TRADING was founded by Mohamed Jakel bin Ahmad on 24 January 1983 in Muar, Johor. In its early days, Jakel Trading started off a textile wholesale supplier to small retailers around Muar town.
In 1985, Jakel opened a branch in Segamat, Johor. With an additional capital investment of RM500,000, Jakel expanded its operations through retail trading and supplying textiles to both government and private agencies. Thanks to a combination of business acumen and sound management, Jakel successfully weathered the 1997 economic downturn and grew from strength to strength.
Jakel has initiated a great change in local entrepreneurship: while the textile business was once monopolised by foreigners, it is now proudly led by Bumiputera entrepreneurs. Thus, Jakel has firmly established its premium position at the forefront of the local textile industry.
With the goal of ‘One Branch, One State’, Jakel now has 18 branches all over the country – with the newest being in Alor Setar, Kedah – to provide the best quality fabric selections and fulfill the needs and desires of the discerning Malaysian public.
And now, Jakel has finally arrived at the heart of the nation’s capital city. The opening of a stunning six-storey Textile Gallery with seven lots at Jalan Bunus off Jalan Masjid India, as well as the arrival of the six-storey Jakel Shah Alam with five lots and 80,000 square feet of premium retail space, has established Jakel as the chief promoter of the Bumiputera textile industry in Malaysia.
The Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad (PUNB), which is Malaysia’s national entrepreneur development corporation, also entrusted Jakel with an immensely important role: as a Bumiputera Entrepreneurship Prosper Mentor, Jakel provides valuable training and guidance to Bumiputera entrepreneurs with a keen interest in the textile industry.
Thanks to its huge RM30 million investment in the opening of the Kuala Lumpur branch and the lavish RM50 million invested in the Section 7, Shah Alam branch, Jakel has reached the pinnacles of success. With its high quality premium products from Europe, Jakel has secured its sterling status as the city’s centre of quality fabric selections.
